copper carries it there, amethyst throws it, you catch it in your hand

the crown atop two copper segments, catching the sky
the crown atop two copper segments, catching the sky

a hub in a wall of chests, copper conduit run between them, a tap standing at every chest's side like a wall lever. reach any tapped chest from your hand instead of walking to it: a receiver bound to the hub opens the same list a hopper would see, if a hopper could be searched. click to pull, shift-click to push, type to narrow it down -- the chests still hold everything the network only shows you where it is.

the reach is earned, not switched on. raise a rod of copper segments and cap it with an amethyst crown that can see open sky, and everywhere within sixty-four blocks of that crown, any height, counts as in range. strike the crown with the copper hammer and the network sounds its own note, one pitch per hub; strike a receiver on the hub with the same tool and it is bound for good, answering only that note from then on. a relay asks for no sky at all -- plant one inside an existing circle and its own smaller bubble joins on, coverage grown by relays alone, eight hops out from the crown at most.

nothing here moves on its own power. no drive, no crafting screen at the hub, no chunk held open for the network's sake -- a tap whose chest has gone to sleep just answers from memory, greyed in the list, until its chunk wakes back up. the crown wants sky because a signal has to leave from somewhere honest, and the chests themselves are never touched: everything the network moves, it moves through the same slots a hopper would use. the boxes you built stay exactly what you built them as.

0.2.0 gives the hub an owner and grants, so it stops trusting the whole house by default. the terminal grew a register page listing every tapped chest on the network, with unhook and rehook right there for the ones you want to pull off or put back. a tap can now be told to take a kind of thing instead of one sample stack -- tag-wide designation, so and things like it finally means what it sounds like. and a /mast probe command, backed by five headless playtests, proves the whole network from the console with nobody standing at a chest.
