linn
0.1.0big water, made to be dammed
four kinds of big, cascading water carved into the overworld at the surface step, so each one crosses vanilla's own rivers and terrain rather than replacing them: a tarn in a high mountain valley, sinks in its floor sometimes opening into a flooded cave beneath; a reach winding wide through plains and forest, a weir every stretch making its own still pool; a gill cut narrow and deep under dark canopy; a spate stepping fast down through ice and snow, blue ice on the bed so the lane down the middle still reads deep. cascading is the shape all four share — a ladder of still pools joined by falls, and a fall is the only place any of it actually flows.
every pool is built oversized on purpose: 128 or more connected source blocks, 4 or more deep, double what a works headgate needs to go live at all. and every fall has a neck — a stone pinch narrow and high enough to wall — so a linn is never short a dam site, only short of which one to build first. no items, no blocks, nothing to craft: linn hands works a pond already deep enough and full enough, and gets out of the way.
the four kinds
| gesture | you get |
|---|---|
| tarn -- mountains, peaks, stony slopes | 24-40 across, 14-24 deep; sinks can open into a flooded cave |
| reach -- plains, meadow, forest | 12-40 across, a weir and a fresh still pool every 40-70 blocks |
| gill -- dark forest, old growth, jungle, swamp edge | 6-9 across, 5-7 deep; the banks are the walls, a neck almost everywhere |
| spate -- snowy taiga, grove, frozen peaks | 8-12 across, ice-sheeted pools, spray at every step |
