a dog for the snow. huskies run the snowy taigas and plains and the groves, tame on salmon, and everything a wolf can do a husky does โ€” sit, follow, wear the armour. what it adds is the nose.

crouch and show your own husky a thing โ€” any thing โ€” and it takes the scent. it does not know where the thing is: it searches, nose to the ground, glancing back at you every so often, and only finds what it has genuinely walked into range of. then it leads โ€” and it will not run ahead of its person: past a dozen blocks it stops, turns, and barks until you catch up. arrival is two bright barks and a scatter of earth. no gui, no hud; everything this dog knows leaks out as body language.

the wind helps: scent carries downwind, so the husky searches upwind, and further the harder it blows. rain slows a wet nose. and where the crows live, an idle husky sometimes smells the disturbed earth over a buried cache and digs it up on its own โ€” the drama nobody ordered, refereed by no one.

the sled is a chest on runners: harness your husky with a lead, load it, and let the ground decide the pace โ€” it flies on ice and snow, trudges on dirt, and drags audibly on bare stone. and at dusk, or under a full moon, a husky may put its head back and howl; up to three wolves answer out of the dark.
