livestock that come in out of the rain

a roof, one honest doorway, hay: byre knows a barn when you build one
a roof, one honest doorway, hay: byre knows a barn when you build one

there is no byre block, no marker, no claiming tool. build a barn — mostly roofed, with a doorway something could actually walk through — and byre recognises it. cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and horses drift toward it when rain sets in, when the cold bites, and at dusk, and they drift home again after.

nothing is punished for staying out. an animal that cannot find a byre shelters under a tree, the way vanilla already lets it, and the goal yields to whatever the animal would rather be doing. the path they wear through the doorway is handed to trodden when trodden is home, and to seasons for the winter cold that makes shelter mean something.

as of 1.3.0 a kept beast gives. sheltered and uncrowded, a cow, sheep, pig or goat leaves muck on the byre floor on a clock, and a sheep sheds a wool of its colour, for a rake to clear and a belt to carry. a crowded pen never pays, and no machine ever touches the animal.
