rare, real, and an event

the lights, over the dark line of the world
the lights, over the dark line of the world

the aurora is rare on purpose โ€” clear, cold, deep night, gated the way night air's fireflies are gated: only when the world is being kind, which here means cold and clear and patient. a handful of nights in a cold month, almost never in summer, weighted toward the hours past midnight. when it comes, it is the kind of night you wake someone up for.

it climbs out of the northern sky in slow-waving curtains, riding the sky's own star-fade seam โ€” the same one star wheel and balefire already draw from โ€” so dawn and weather dissolve it exactly as they dissolve the stars. the bands anchor to true north, which quietly makes the aurora a navigation tool in the waypost spirit โ€” no compass drawn, just the sky teaching you which way is which. brightness stays deliberately below anything that counts as a light source: it illuminates nothing, it is only seen.

one night in six the curtains lean red at the crown, laid rare over the common green. and the world goes a little quieter with them โ€” the ambient soundscape thins, one soft shimmer-drone plays as the lights come up, barely there, the kind of audio tell that makes people look up before their eyes have caught it.
